 The
British Virgin Islands, known by many as "BVI"
offers remarkable diving along with the natural beauty of
these protected islands.
Like many of the islands of the Caribbean these islands
that comprise BVI were discovered in 1493 by Christopher
Columbus. BVI is located just a little east of Puerto Rico
and a dash north of the US Virgin Islands of St. Thomas
and St. John. Legend has it Columbus thought that there
were so many islands that there must be thousands and he
was reminded of the tale of St. Ursula and her 11,000 virgins.
And so the islands were named the Virgin Islands and St.
Ursula became the patron saint. Tortola is named for the
turtle dove (in Spanish) and Virgin Gorda is Spanish for
Fat Virgin. The islands are now a British Dependent Territory,
but are self governing.
